For a second year, SJ Mallein & Associates’ acclaimed DesignSmart continuing education symposium will be held at two locations. Join us in Oakbrook Terrace on November 7th or downtown on November 8th.
The complimentary event will feature four AIA-accredited continuing education presentations and open discussions on roof wind design challenges, designing for adverse conditions, and designing compliant façade access anchorage systems.
The program will award four (4) hours of continuing education credits (4 LU/HSW).
The event features lunch and concludes with an open bar cocktail hour.

Winds of Change
Tackling Roof Wind Design Challenges in a Changing World
Go beyond the basics of wind design by reviewing the tools available to help you deal with today’s dynamic climate and regulatory challenges. We’ll take a look at the on-line calculators, the requirements, the results, and most importantly, what it actually means to the contractor, the building owner, and the roofing system’s resilience and durability. We’ll consider the impact that different wind design approaches and calculators can have on the roofing systems that are installed to accommodate them.
Advanced Design Against Adverse Conditions in a Commercial Roofing System
This course will build upon basic cover board education and teach you how to identify and articulate the most common risk factors and adverse conditions for commercial roof damage. Further, you'll learn how to identify regional idiosyncrasies with these risk factors and understand the agencies, codes and corresponding test methods that address them. Lastly, you'll learn how fiber glass gypsum-faced panels can mitigate these risks and significantly impact the performance of roof assembly.

Loss Mitigation through Building Design
The rise in natural disaster events has led to insurance claims in the billions of dollars, and most importantly, loss of life. This trend has prompted standards such as ES1 and GT-1 to be added to international building code, but what else can be done to mitigate risk? Through this course, learn about how specifying the roof edge is the single most cost-effective enhancement for wind uplift on a commercial roof and how you can help mitigate risk and protect lives through design.
How to Design Compliant Anchorage Systems for Window Cleaning and Façade Access
Learn about the best practices for the proper specification of rooftop equipment for use by facade access professionals and window washers. We will also review the code requirements for rope decent systems and roof-launched powered platforms while also developing an understanding of compliant anchorage arrays for use by rope access workers, and discuss structural connections for various retrofit applications.
